This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
A series of lessons in Raja yoga William Walker Atkinson Books
This is the 3rd book that I have read from William Walter Atkinson. As in his other books, the author presents his views in a very unique, informative and compelling manner. In his discussion of Raja Yoga, the author states that we are the extension of the "Absolute" but are not the "Absolute" as expounded in some yoga schools. In other words, we are not "God" and the Universe is not a trick or fragment of our imagination; however, the "Supreme Intelligence", the "Absolute", has manifested itself in relativitiy, namely in different forms of life including Man. Atkinson further explains that Man is the Spark of God, a real Being, who is a Manifestation and Child of the "Absolute". In discussing Raja Yoga, the author delves into different aspects of the mind, consciousness, subconsciousness, mental control, amongst other topics, and incorporates examples and the use of mental drills to make the subject more understandable in a practical sense. I would highly recommend this book.Product details

A series of lessons in Raja yoga William Walker Atkinson Books Reviews
Somebody left a scathing review here because WW Atkinson "is no yogi." But happily, this works for me because I'm a New Ager who sees the commonality between that and the spiritual traditions of India. I'm not offended in the least, and believe I will be well-served by this book.
This book was written in the early part of the 20th C. Some of the material seems dated. This is good because it means we have advanced since then.
The book is worthwhile to read. I am not familiar with raja yoga, so I cannot comment on real substance.
I can comment on a few things, though.
Our notion of ego has changed since this book was written. It appears that the author borrowed from the new field of psychiatry and its notion of the ego for this book, and for this time. Fair enough. But today, "ego" is a depreciated term, and means something different. Today "ego" is often a negative, and not a neutral term as it is employed here.
Another point is that I believe we have advanced in our views of polarities and opposites. Maybe not as much as I would like. This book treats polarities and opposites like poles of a magnet. Good. But the author falls into the "positive-negative" or "higher-lower" trap and suddenly one pole looks a lot better than the other. This seems to be an ingrained residue of "good-evil" look at polarity. I would be better, in my opinion, to leave those all aside that have value judgments associated with them and use something neutral such are "black and red" which some fields of electrical wiring use. Even these terms can have somewhat of a taint, but not nearly as much as "higher-lower" or "positive-negative".
The reason the name of these opposites have is because when we use a pair of names where one name has a better reception to its name is that we lose sight that opposites need the other in order to exist. You cannot have left without a right, light without darkness for example. If you increase one side, you must also automatically increase the other, and the reverse is also true. You cannot eliminate evil without eliminating good, or diminish one without diminishing the other. It's rather like anti-depressants You can take a pill to minimize depression, but you also dampen any euphoria.
This book is ok, it didn't really resonate with me and was hard to read.
I have purchased several copies of this book through the years and it, of course, is a great resource to have on hand. My only issue with this edition is the size of the print. This smaller print makes the book almost unreadable, therefore useless as a gift. Too bad someone has decided to cut corners on a publication that was perfect as it was. Cutting corners is not always a good idea.
Not classical Raja yog, or Ashtanga Yoga, but one articulative man's inventive interpretation of it. The book should have been named MIND CONTROL, period. It does not deal with the higher or kingly spiritual experiences of yoga .
I have been practicing Hatha as well as Raja Yoga for the last 50 plus years. I have read all sorts of authors. The problem with Indian authors generally is their language, which is very difficult to follow. It took me many years and reading many books for them to start making any sense.
Yogi Ramacharaka seems to have been an American lawyer, editor and writer who used this name as a pseudonym. Or so goes the history. I tend to believe this story as the language used by Ramacharaka is attuned to, and reads as if it was written by an Occidental. Thanks to this book I was able to complete deciphering other books. They all agree in the main.
I would recommend this book to anybody who is really interested in these matters. He or she may need other books as well.
You start reading for a while and suddenly different thoughts you have begin to make sense. The affirmations and positive thinking that is encouraged is worth the read. I just wish it was all condensed in a book half the size it is. Too much repetition.
